The brief: AUTHOR was engaged to rebrand Newcastle Rugby League, delivering a full visual and communication identity, including video production. The objective was to modernize the brand while honouring its rich rugby heritage and its evolution into a growing, high-quality competition.
The story: Since 1910, Newcastle Rugby League has been a cornerstone of the Hunter region, uniting communities and inspiring a love for rugby league. This rebrand celebrates the inclusivity and spirit of the people who bring the competition to life. The introduction of "NEWRL," a vibrant abbreviation, reflects the evolution of the competition while preserving its deep roots in heritage. This modernized identity captures the energy and passion that defines NEWRL, appealing to players, fans, and future generations.
The look: AUTHOR reimagined the traditional Rugby League shield design, blending modernity with heritage. The updated shield pays homage to the iconic blue hues of NSW and Newcastle, embodying the region’s strong connection to the game. Prominently featuring “Est. 1910,” the design celebrates NEWRL’s proud history while positioning the brand for the future.
The message: AUTHOR crafted the message to capture NEWRL’s essence as more than a competition—it’s the heart of community connection in the Hunter region. Since 1910, rugby league has united players, coaches, referees, volunteers, and fans, fostering a sense of belonging and pride. The tagline, “More than a footy comp, it’s a true-blue community,” highlights NEWRL’s inclusivity and celebrates its role as a unifying force, reinforcing its deep-rooted impact on the region.
